Acidity and pH measurement

In order for the plant to have optimal conditions for nutrient uptake, it is important to maintain a stable pH. In recirculating systems, the pH fluctuates more significantly than in run-to-waste systems. This is because various waste products from the roots directly affect the pH value of the nutrient solution. How great this influence is depends on the composition of the nutrient solution, the phase and condition of the plant, or on how often and how well the plant is supplied with water.

During the growth phase, pH usually increases due to the roots secreting substances that increase pH. The opposite process occurs during the flowering phase, when substances released by the roots lower pH values. Providing plants with specialized nutrition for both phases will help maintain a stable pH.

The pH value can also be affected by the presence of trace elements in the water. With hard water, the pH of the water is more likely to increase after mixing with fertilizers. On the contrary, with soft water, the pH value is more likely to decrease. In areas with soft water, it is more appropriate to prepare a nutrient solution with a higher pH value of 5.8-6.2. At a lower pH value, some substances (iron, manganese, etc.) dissolve more easily and can oversaturate the plant.

The first step to maintaining a stable pH value is regular checking and measurement using pH and EC meters.
