The ballast is an essential part of every lighting set. Without it, you cannot light a discharge lamp. That is why they are part of discounted complete lamps. Low price, decent lifespan, and decent performance are the main advantages of electromagnetic ballasts. A thermal fuse and overheating protection are standard. The disadvantages are more complex wiring, higher weight, and imperfect lighting efficiency. You can't even regulate the output of discharge lamps with these conventional ballasts.

High-end electronic ballasts

In contrast, high-frequency electronic ballasts have many advantages and significantly simplify the entire lighting process. Thanks to the higher frequency, they are significantly quieter, do not cause flickering of the lights and light up the discharge lamp faster. A big plus is the ability to regulate the lighting power, usually at four levels. The GSE V2.0 600W and GIB LXG Timer 600W ballasts can even regulate one Watt at a time!

In addition, electronic ballasts squeeze maximum power from the lamp (above-standard PAR, lm/W, PAR/W values), are more efficient, more economical and their operation is safer. The higher price is balanced by quality. Electronic ballasts with an IEC connector can also be installed much easier than conventional ballasts.

A modern option for effective plant lighting are CMH ballasts with revolutionary and efficient LEC (light emitting ceramic) technology.

Remember that these are sensitive and potentially dangerous electrical devices. Do not allow direct contact with water, do not allow high humidity, protect from improper handling and mechanical damage. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions. Always disconnect from the mains when handling. For electromagnetic ballasts, follow Decree No. 50 on occupational safety.
